In a significant intelligence-led operation aimed at curbing criminal activities, law enforcement authorities in the Upper East Region have apprehended 80 suspects. The operation, which was conducted from May 25 to June 3, 2026, spanned multiple locations, including Zuarungu, Bolgatanga, Tongo, Bongo, and various communities within the Nabdam District. This large-scale effort targeted individuals involved in narcotic peddling, drug abuse, and other criminal undertakings.
According to a police press release dated June 4, 2026, the operation yielded substantial results, including the recovery of suspected narcotic substances, ammunition, motorbikes, foreign cigarettes, and casino jackpot machines. Zuarungu: A Focus on Drug Peddling and Consumption
In Zuarungu, police arrested 12 suspects, consisting of eight males and four females. Among the female suspects were three Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian citizen. Preliminary investigations suggest that these individuals were engaged in narcotic peddling and consumption as well as other criminal activities. The arrests mark a critical step in addressing drug-related crimes in the area.
Bongo: The Highest Number of Arrests
The Bongo area recorded the largest number of arrests during the operation, with 34 individuals detained. Of these, 32 were males and two were females. Law enforcement officers also retrieved three rounds of 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition and two motorbikes. The discovery of live ammunition has raised concerns about potential links between some of the suspects and other criminal activities. Investigations into these connections are ongoing.
Nabdam District: A Targeted Operation
In the Nabdam District, police focused their efforts on Pelungu, Kongo, and Nangodi. A total of 14 suspects—12 males and two females—were apprehended during the operation. Authorities seized parcels and sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances. Additionally, they recovered assorted drinks believed to contain narcotic content, an unregistered motorbike, foreign cigarettes, and parts of a casino jackpot machine. These exhibits have been retained for further investigation.
Bolgatanga: A Haul of Suspected Narcotics and Motorbikes
The operation in Bolgatanga led to the arrest of 20 suspects. Items confiscated from the suspects included dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted cigarettes, a Yamaha black Sirius motorbike with registration number M-19-UE 2688, a black Luojia motorbike with registration number M-13-UE 7181, an unregistered Haojue motorbike, and a casino jackpot machine.
Tongo: Disrupting Criminal Networks
In Tongo, police recovered a motorcycle, assorted foreign cigarettes, male condoms, and quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. These recoveries formed part of the broader operation aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within the region.
Legal Proceedings and Public Cooperation
The Regional Police Command has confirmed that all suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations. Upon completion of these investigations, they will be arraigned before the court to face legal proceedings.
