In a startling turn of events, the Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into a shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo. The incident, which occurred at the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka's residence in Kwabenya, has left the former Gender Minister with a gunshot wound to her left ear. The case has drawn significant public attention, as it unfolds against the backdrop of a contentious leadership succession within the Kristo Asafo Church.

Police Investigation Underway

According to an official statement from the Ghana Police Service, the Madina Divisional Command is currently probing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Adwoa Safo reported the matter to the Kwabenya Police and presented a vehicle bearing registration number GN 3482-24, which displayed visible gunshot damage. She was subsequently issued a medical report form and is now receiving treatment for her injuries. The vehicle has been retained by authorities for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

Conflicting Accounts of Events

While police investigations continue, conflicting narratives have emerged regarding the events leading to the shooting. Nana Kofi Kantanka, a lawyer representing the Kristo Asafo Church, has provided an alternative account that paints a different picture of what transpired.

Speaking during an interview on JoyNews on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Kantanka alleged that Adwoa Safo arrived at her late father's residence during an event introducing the church’s newly appointed leader to its General Council. According to him, she attempted to force her way through the gates with her car, first ramming the southern gate and then moving to the northern gate to repeat the action. He further claimed that she fired the first shot during the confrontation.

Kantanka stated that private security personnel, perceiving a threat to the safety of attendees, responded with warning shots. He also clarified that initial loud noises thought to be gunfire were later identified as sounds from Adwoa Safo’s vehicle crashing into the gates.

Leadership Dispute at Kristo Asafo Church

The incident appears to be linked to an ongoing succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo movement following the passing of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka. The leadership transition has been fraught with tension, and this confrontation has only heightened public scrutiny of internal dynamics within the church.

Kantanka dismissed claims that Adwoa Safo had been barred from attending the event, stating that she would have been granted access if she had followed standard entry procedures. He added that he could not confirm whether she had been injured during the altercation.

 Next Steps

Both state security agencies and church authorities are expected to conduct thorough investigations to uncover the full details of this incident. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all efforts are being made to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry.

This unfortunate event underscores the complexities surrounding leadership transitions in religious organizations and raises questions about the measures in place to prevent such confrontations. As investigations proceed, it is hoped that clarity will emerge, bringing resolution to both the legal and organizational issues at hand.

The public awaits further updates from law enforcement and church authorities as they work to establish accountability and ensure justice is served.
