In a distressing turn of events, the Dambai Divisional Police Command has apprehended Kwabena Badam, a 35-year-old farmer, in connection with the fatal shooting of an unidentified man. The incident, which transpired in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, has sent ripples of concern through the community of Abongo No. 1 in the Krachi East Municipality of Ghana's Oti Region.
Preliminary reports from the Ghana News Agency (GNA) suggest that the deceased was allegedly caught in the act of attempting to steal a sack of yams from Mr. Badam's farm. In response, the farmer reportedly discharged his firearm, resulting in the immediate death of the suspect. This tragic event has prompted an official police investigation to unravel the circumstances leading to the shooting.
According to sources, Mr. Badam had frequently expressed grievances over recurrent thefts of his agricultural produce, which he had duly reported to local law enforcement on numerous occasions. Following the incident, Mr. Badam took the initiative to report himself to the Dambai Divisional Police Command, where he disclosed details of the shooting and was subsequently taken into custody.
Mr. Philip Kwadwo Bidaba, Assembly Member for the Kwame-Akura East Electoral Area, recounted receiving an early morning call on Sunday, alerting him to the shooting of a suspected yam thief. Upon visiting the Dambai Police Station, he learned that Mr. Badam had already surrendered himself to authorities.
Efforts to identify the deceased have been met with challenges. Mr. Bidaba noted that although community members gathered at the police station to assist with identification, their request to open the secured body bag was declined by police officials. Consequently, the body was transported to the Worawora Government Hospital Mortuary in the Biakoye District for preservation and autopsy.
As investigations continue, the identities of both the deceased and Mr. Badam remain undisclosed by police authorities. The community awaits further developments as formal identification and preliminary investigations unfold.
