In a recent development at the Assin Fosu District Court, a 23-year-old man, Emmanuel Amoah, has been remanded into custody on charges of robbery. The case has garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations, involving an attack on an okada rider in the Central Region.
The Incident
According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on May 21, 2026. The complainant, Isaac Essuman, an okada rider based in Assin Fosu, was reportedly hired by the accused for a trip to Assin Sienchem. The agreed fare for this journey was GH¢200. However, the situation took a violent turn upon reaching a section of the road at Assin Essan.
The prosecution alleges that Emmanuel Amoah attacked Mr. Essuman by throwing powdered pepper into his eyes. Subsequently, he reportedly stabbed the rider in the right hand with a pair of scissors, aiming to incapacitate him and prevent any resistance. This violent act is said to have enabled Amoah to abscond with Mr. Essuman’s black Haojin motorcycle, valued at GH¢15,000. Additionally, a brown waist bag containing two mobile phones, a National Health Insurance Card, a Ghana Card, a rider’s license, and an unspecified amount of cash was also allegedly stolen.
Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, Mr. Essuman promptly reported the matter to the police and was issued a medical report form to seek treatment for his injuries. The investigation took a significant turn on July 22, 2026, when Mr. Essuman received information that a newly acquired motorcycle was being offered for operation as an okada in Assin Pra Agave.
Acting on this tip-off, Mr. Essuman, accompanied by friends, proceeded to the location. Investigations led them to the residence of Emmanuel Amoah. Upon seeing Mr. Essuman, Amoah allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended and subsequently handed over to the police.
During police investigations, Amoah denied the allegations in his caution statement. However, his plea was not taken by the court.
Judicial Decision
Presiding over the case, His Worship Abdul Majid Illiasu decided to remand Emmanuel Amoah into custody for one month. This decision aims to allow the police adequate time to continue their investigations into the matter. The law under which Amoah has been charged is Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which pertains to robbery.
The case has been adjourned to August 21, 2026, when Emmanuel Amoah is expected to reappear before the court.
