In a significant operation, the Tema Regional Police Command, supported by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada, successfully intercepted a wooden canoe powered by outboard motors carrying a substantial quantity of suspected narcotics. This operation took place on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island, highlighting the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking in the region.
According to an official press release dated September 18, the interception occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, precisely at 00:45 am. This was during a routine patrol, underscoring the importance of regular surveillance in maintaining law and order on the waterways.
Upon spotting the approaching police, the occupants of the canoe abandoned their vessel and fled the scene. A subsequent search of the canoe uncovered 29 sacks containing a total of 2,213 slabs of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp. These substances were meticulously wrapped in yellow cellophane, indicating a level of sophistication in their packaging.
In addition to the suspected narcotics, the police also discovered 14 25-litre gallons on board. Of these, 12 were filled with pre-mixed fuel, essential for powering the canoe’s two Yamaha outboard motors—one with a capacity of 40HP and the other 30HP.
The seized narcotic substances have since been transported to the Ada District Police Headquarters for further analysis and secure storage. Meanwhile, plans are underway to relocate the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station to aid in ongoing investigations.
The Tema Regional Police Command is actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend those responsible for abandoning the canoe and its illicit cargo. This operation serves as a stern reminder of the authorities' commitment to eradicating narcotic trafficking and ensuring public safety.
The Command has issued a cautionary note to the public, urging against involvement in the trafficking and transportation of narcotics. They have also appealed for public cooperation, encouraging anyone with information regarding the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to come forward. Such information is crucial in assisting law enforcement agencies with their investigations and bringing those responsible to justice.
As this case unfolds, it stands as a testament to the vigilance and dedication of the regional police in safeguarding the community from the adverse effects of narcotic substances. The public is reminded of their role in supporting these efforts by providing timely and accurate information to law enforcement officials.
