We are deeply concerned about the prolonged silence of the Ghanaian government regarding the disappearance of seven individuals along the Ghana-Burkina Faso border. The Bissa Development Association of Ghana condemns the lack of updates and communication from the government to the affected families.
Background
The seven men, residents of the Bador and Tampizua communities in the Bawku Municipality, went missing on October 11, 2023, while attempting to retrieve their cattle from the Bittu District of Burkina Faso. Their names are Abdulai Bagre, Mumuni Seidu, Issaka Nyikabo, Abu Kadir Salifu, Jebrilu Braimah, Bande Mamudu, and Bande Shaibu.
Concerns and Condemnation
During a press conference in Bawku on Sunday, January 21, Alhaji Abdul Malik Ibrahim Bansi, spokesperson for the Bissa Development Association, expressed the anguish and distress experienced by the families of the missing men. He emphasized the urgent need for the government to take action and investigate this distressing situation.
Despite efforts by the affected families to engage with the government on multiple occasions, there has been a lack of reassurance or information about the progress of the investigation. The families continue to appeal to the government for support and resolution.
Government Response
In response to these concerns, Amadu Hamza, the Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, refuted claims of inaction by the government. He stated that efforts have been made and international protocols have been activated to address the situation. Additionally, Bawku central MP, Mahama Ayariga, appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to engage diplomatic channels with Burkina Faso military authorities to locate and return the missing individuals.
Call for Transparency and Urgency
The Bissa Development Association of Ghana remains steadfast in calling for transparency and urgency in resolving this distressing matter. The families of the missing men deserve answers and support during this difficult time. We urge the government to prioritize this issue and provide regular updates to the affected families and the public.
It is essential that all necessary resources and diplomatic channels are utilized to ensure the safe return of Abdulai Bagre, Mumuni Seidu, Issaka Nyikabo, Abu Kadir Salifu, Jebrilu Braimah, Bande Mamudu, and Bande Shaibu. Our thoughts are with their families as we await a swift and positive resolution to this distressing situation.
