We are pleased to announce that the Bank of Ghana is taking proactive steps to address concerns related to unauthorized deductions on mobile money transfers. In collaboration with officials from the Ghana Revenue Authority and stakeholders within the financial sector, a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 6, to discuss and resolve this pressing issue.

In response to the advocacy efforts of various parties, including Citi FM, the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Communications Committee, Sam George, has emphasized the need for a prompt resolution of the unauthorized charges reported by mobile money users. He highlighted an upcoming meeting involving the Bank of Ghana, Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs), telecommunications companies, and banks, aimed at addressing the systemic issues associated with the ELMAS system.

It has come to our attention that there are challenges with the real-time uploads of data to the ELMAS system by banks and EMIs, leading to the unauthorized deductions experienced by mobile money users. This meeting presents an opportunity for all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards finding a viable solution to this pressing issue.

Furthermore, Mr. Sam George expressed concerns about the implementation architecture of the e-levy and urged the government to carefully consider its approach to avoid hasty decisions that may lead to unintended consequences. He emphasized the importance of thorough deliberation to ensure the effectiveness and success of such initiatives.

Additionally, it is reassuring to note that parliament will also be looking into this matter, further underscoring the commitment to addressing the challenges faced by mobile money users.

As we look ahead to the scheduled meeting, we remain optimistic that collaborative efforts between the Bank of Ghana, relevant authorities, and stakeholders will lead to meaningful outcomes and ultimately alleviate the concerns surrounding unauthorized deductions on mobile money transfers. We encourage all parties involved to approach this discussion with a spirit of cooperation and determination to find practical and sustainable solutions.

We will continue to monitor developments related to this issue and provide updates as necessary.
