The Ghana Police Service has ramped up its efforts to combat crime, with recent operations targeting robbery syndicates, rescuing victims of human trafficking, and dismantling criminal networks across the country. From Bolgatanga to Accra and Tema, the police have intensified their resolve to restore law and order, taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of citizens.

Bolgatanga Operations: Cracking Down on Armed Robbers

In Bolgatanga, the Upper East Region, the police conducted a high-stakes operation on January 2, 2026, which led to a confrontation with armed robbers. The incident unfolded when personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were pursuing a suspect, Banabas Akolgo, also known as Akoli. Akolgo, identified as the leader of an armed robbery gang, was initially apprehended at a hideout in Kotokoli, a suburb of Bolgatanga. He had promised to lead authorities to additional suspects.

However, while en route to another hideout, police officers were ambushed by armed gang members attempting to free Akolgo. In the ensuing shootout, Akolgo sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to his wounds while being transported to the hospital. At the scene, the police recovered five spent AK47 cartridges, four live rounds of ammunition, and a black scooter bike suspected to belong to the gang.

Further investigations revealed that Akolgo and his accomplices had committed numerous robberies along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway and in residential areas of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. The gang was notorious for terrorizing commuters and residents, snatching motorbikes, mobile phones, and cash. Notable incidents included a robbery in Kumasi where they stole GHC95,000 from a shop owner and another attack on a fertilizer shop in Bolgatanga.

The police have identified several accomplices of Akolgo, including individuals known as Abuto, Maxwell (alias Cashout), Shatta, Weezy (alias Wee Bag), and convicted prisoner Bashit. Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend these individuals.

Arrests in Accra: Tackling Urban Robbery

In Accra, police made significant progress in their fight against urban crime. On January 14, 2026, two individuals, Stephen Gletsu and Mohammed Sheriff, were arrested while riding an unregistered motorbike. Upon noticing a police patrol team, the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended after losing control of their vehicle.

A search of the suspects revealed multiple mobile phones of different brands, GHC2,690 in cash, two U.S. dollars, and a necklace—all suspected to be stolen property. During interrogation, Gletsu and Sheriff confessed to committing 50 robbery incidents within Accra. Several victims have since come forward to identify their stolen items. The police officers involved in this successful operation have been promoted in recognition of their efforts.

Human Trafficking Rescue in Tema

The Ghana Police Service also achieved a major breakthrough in its fight against human trafficking. On February 2, 2026, a team from the Special Operations Assistance to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), in collaboration with personnel from the OkpoiGono district, arrested two individuals—Robinson Endurance and Derrick Glory—in Tema Community 25. The suspects were found to have kidnapped ten victims who were being exploited for cybercrime operations.

The rescue operation underscores the police's commitment to addressing cross-border crimes such as human trafficking. The victims, believed to have been trafficked from Nigeria, have since been rescued and are receiving care and support.

A Renewed Commitment to Public Safety

These recent operations reflect a strategic shift by the Ghana Police Service toward proactive crime prevention and dismantling criminal networks. As stated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno: "We are taking back our streets, and no one is above the law."

By intensifying intelligence-led operations and leveraging collaboration across regions, the Ghana Police Service is sending a clear message to criminal elements that law enforcement is resolute in its mission to restore public safety. The promotion of officers involved in these successful operations further highlights the importance of their dedication and bravery.

As these efforts continue across Ghana, citizens are encouraged to support the police by providing information on criminal activities and remaining vigilant. Together, these actions will contribute to creating safer communities and ensuring justice for all.
