In a concerning development in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, a 53-year-old man has been apprehended for allegedly mixing narcotic substances into both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The suspect, identified as Adjei Owusu Afriyie, was arrested in Akyeremade, located in the Atwima Kwawoma District, during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
The arrest took place on Thursday morning when law enforcement officers raided a local pub known as “De-Vicky’s.” During the operation, investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that customers were being served drinks laced with hard drugs. The raid included a thorough search of the premises, particularly the suspect’s storeroom, where multiple containers of beverages were seized.
According to an official police statement, the items retrieved during the operation included seven barrels of locally manufactured dry gin, commonly referred to as "akpeteshie," fifty-six branded bottles of Alomo gin, one barrel containing sobolo (a popular local drink made from hibiscus leaves), and one gallon of sobolo. Preliminary assessments conducted on-site suggested that these beverages had been adulterated with narcotic substances.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is cooperating with ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, the seized items have been secured and are undergoing forensic examination to confirm the presence of narcotics. Authorities are also working to uncover additional details surrounding the case, including the potential involvement of accomplices.
