We have received reports of a disturbing incident that occurred at the Racecourse Market in the Ashanti Region. On Monday, March 11, 2024, a fire outbreak led to a confrontation between fire officers and individuals at the scene. As a result, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with the alleged assault on the fire officers.

The altercation resulted in one of the fire officers sustaining injuries. The suspects reportedly accused the fire service personnel of a delayed response, leading to a retaliatory act of pelting stones.

The fire, which began around 1 am on Monday, caused significant damage to a section of the Racecourse Market where millers and traders of foodstuffs and ingredients operated. Approximately 180 container shops were affected, resulting in devastating losses for the traders.

The Fire Commander for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Fire Station, D.O 3 Simon Ben Boadu, has attributed the rapid spread of the fire to the attack on the fire crew. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from one of the corn mills and quickly spread due to the congested nature of the market.

It is disheartening to learn about this incident and the impact it has had on the affected individuals. The loss of belongings and destruction of milling machines has undoubtedly caused great distress.

As investigations into this incident continue, it is imperative that those responsible for the assault on the fire officers are held accountable. The attack on emergency responders is unacceptable and must be strongly condemned. We trust that the authorities will pursue this matter diligently and ensure that justice is served.

Our thoughts are with the traders and individuals who have suffered losses as a result of this unfortunate event. We hope that they receive the necessary support to recover from this challenging situation.

It is crucial for all members of the community to recognize the importance of supporting emergency responders and working together to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. We urge for calm and cooperation as efforts are made to address the aftermath of the fire at the Racecourse Market.
