In a troubling turn of events, students at Bekwai SDA Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti region have found themselves in the midst of a violent altercation, resulting in some fleeing the school out of fear for their safety.
The clashes, which reportedly involved boarding students and individuals suspected to be day students in collaboration with town hooligans, escalated into a physical confrontation on the school campus. According to an account provided by a student to starrfm, a heated quarrel between a boarding student and a day student on Friday, March 22, 2024, quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
Following the departure of the day students, a group of masked individuals wielding machetes descended upon the school, prompting the students to defend themselves by retaliating with stones. The situation ultimately led to the expulsion of the intruders from the school premises. Regrettably, the intervention of the police was required to facilitate the transfer of injured students to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, with one student reported to have sustained a machete slash and others suffering severe injuries.
The unrest continued into Saturday evening, with what appeared to be a retaliatory attack by a group of youths riding in rickshaws. This development further agitated the students, leading them to arm themselves with machetes in preparation for a potential confrontation. Ultimately, the students were able to overpower the assailants, resulting in the destruction of one of their vehicles.
In light of these distressing events, it is understandable that some students have made the difficult decision to leave the school due to concerns for their safety.
