In recent times, the Yunyoo-Nasuan District in the North East Region has been facing a significant threat to its peace and security due to the proliferation of 'false' prophesies by some religious leaders. This alarming trend has led to the association of community problems, particularly youth unemployment, with witches allegedly holding meetings on specific economic trees, notably mango trees.

As a result of these unfounded prophesies, there has been a surge in the felling of these economic trees, causing tension and posing a threat to the peace and security of the area. This worrisome situation was brought to light at an engagement on early warning signs of conflict, organized for district-level stakeholders at Yunyoo-Nasuan by the Good Governance, Justice and Peace Directorate of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocesan Development Organisation (NABOCADO), a faith-based organization.

Dr. Joseph Bangu, the Director of NABOCADO, emphasized that the false prophesies have not only led to increasing witchcraft accusations but also subjected many vulnerable people to discrimination and abuse. He underscored the urgency of addressing this situation to prevent further escalation and potential conflicts.

Furthermore, Dr. Bangu highlighted other emerging threats to peace in the area, including increasing ethnic tensions, armed robbery, the spread of the Bawku conflict to the area, and competition for natural resources. These issues serve as early warning signs of potential conflict and necessitate collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to address them effectively.

Mr. Konlan Bitian, the District Chief Executive for Yunyoo-Nasuan, acknowledged the efforts of the District Security Council in addressing the prophecy issues and called for unified support from all stakeholders. He also identified chieftaincy disputes as major factors threatening the peace and stability of the district, emphasizing the need for intensified education to promote peace for sustainable development.

Ms. Cynthia Lamisi Ali, the Assembly member for Jimbale Electoral Area, expressed appreciation for the intervention on peacebuilding by NABOCADO and its partners, recognizing its potential to prevent conflicts and foster harmony within the district.

In advocating for peace and development, Reverend Father Yosef Giday, the Catholic Parish Priest for St. Simon Peter Parish, Nakpanduri, stressed the necessity of engaging and sensitizing the people, especially the chiefs and youth, to embrace peaceful approaches in addressing their differences.

In conclusion, it is evident that the proliferation of 'false' prophesies by religious leaders poses a grave threat to the peace and security of the Yunyoo-Nasuan District. Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including religious leaders, community members, and local authorities. By promoting understanding, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution, the district can pave the way for sustainable development and a harmonious community.
