In a recent ruling at the Gbetseley Circuit Court, four individuals were handed down a 20-year prison sentence for their involvement in a heinous crime. Prosper Amegashie, Jamel Ahmed, Bilal Mohammed, and Martin Victor Agba were found guilty of robbing an okada rider of his motorcycle and fatally stabbing him in the process.

The presiding judge, Mrs. Eleanor Kakra Banes Botchway, delivered the verdict following a thorough trial that established the culpability of the accused individuals.

Initially, the defendants had pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and robbery. However, Inspector Maxwell Ayeh, who led the prosecution, presented compelling evidence that led to their conviction.

According to Inspector Ayeh, the tragic incident occurred on August 29, 2023, when the police received a distress call regarding a man who had been stabbed and left in critical condition at Tema Community 22 annex near ROHI School. Despite efforts to save the victim by rushing him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the Tema General Hospital.

Further investigations revealed that the victim, identified as Victor Addae-Bredu, was ambushed by the perpetrators while riding his motorcycle. The assailants, armed with a knife, attacked him and subsequently stole his motorbike, which they later sold in the Volta Region.

The postmortem examination conducted on the deceased confirmed that the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock, exsanguination, and a stab wound on the left shoulder girdle.

Subsequently, on September 15, 2023, the culprits were apprehended based on police intelligence. During interrogation, they admitted to planning and executing the robbery, leading to their eventual arrest and trial.

The severity of their actions led to their conviction on charges of conspiracy and robbery, resulting in each of them being sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of criminal activities and the importance of upholding the rule of law. The outcome of this trial underscores the commitment of the judicial system to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and deliver justice to the victims and their families.

It is hoped that this verdict brings some measure of closure to the family of the deceased and serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate engaging in similar criminal behavior.
