The Tamale High Court has made a significant decision regarding the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Walewale parliamentary primary dispute. In a recent court session, the NPP's request to settle the dispute out of court was granted, marking a potential turning point in the case.

The dispute arose when the incumbent MP, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, filed a case against her close contender, Dr. Abdul-Karibu Tia Mahama, after losing the election on January 28, 2024. Dr. Mahama, a presidential staffer, emerged as the winner with 343 votes, while Madam Abudu secured 334 votes. In response to the outcome, the first-time MP filed an ex-parte motion in the Tamale High Court challenging the results and seeking a restraining order against the winner from holding himself as the NPP parliamentary candidate-elect for the constituency.

The court's decision to grant the NPP's plea to settle the dispute out of court reflects a willingness to explore alternative avenues for resolution. The parties involved are expected to return on May 23 to report their terms of resolution.

In an interview following the hearing, NPP Director of Elections Evans Nimako expressed gratitude to the court and emphasized the party's commitment to resolving internal issues. He highlighted the party's track record of resolving internal elections and underscored the importance of unity in preparation for the 2024 elections.

Nimako also emphasized the broader goal of securing victory in the 2024 elections and supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's presidential aspirations. With Dr. Bawumia hailing from the Walewale constituency, the NPP is dedicated to ensuring a unified party presence in the area to bolster their electoral prospects and contribute to Dr. Bawumia's presidential ambitions.

The court's decision to allow for an out-of-court settlement demonstrates a commitment to finding amicable solutions to internal party disputes. As the NPP continues its efforts to navigate this issue, all eyes will be on the upcoming developments and the potential implications for both the party and the broader political landscape.

In conclusion, the decision by the Tamale High Court serves as a reminder of the importance of constructive conflict resolution within political parties. The outcome of this dispute and the manner in which it is addressed will undoubtedly have implications for the NPP's future trajectory in Walewale and beyond.
