In recent developments, over 200 residents from border communities in Togo have sought refuge in various parts of the North East region following a suspected attack in Nagudi. The affected residents, predominantly from Tantra 2, Tambeng, and Jangbande, have reportedly evacuated their communities and are seeking safety in nearby towns and villages such as Yunyoo, Bunkpurugu, and Wanchiki.

The suspected attack, allegedly carried out by approximately 10 unidentified armed men on motorbikes, targeted a Togolese community and resulted in the tragic loss of two lives. Joseph Luknan, the District Chief Executive of Bunkpurugu, confirmed the incident, recounting that the armed individuals targeted four young men at a store around 9 pm, leading to the fatalities.

Efforts are currently underway to identify the perpetrators, and security measures in the area have been intensified. Security forces at the Togo border are actively involved in monitoring the situation, with a focus on determining whether the suspects are jihadists or common criminals. The Togolese authorities have also deployed their security personnel to address the situation.

In response to the crisis, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been tasked with conducting a census in various homes to ascertain the number of individuals who have fled Togo. This initiative aims to provide support and assistance to those affected by the suspected attack.

The situation remains fluid as authorities on both sides of the border continue their efforts to address the aftermath of the incident. The safety and well-being of the displaced residents are of utmost importance, and measures are being taken to ensure their protection and security during this challenging time.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for all relevant stakeholders to work together to provide support to those affected and to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region. Our thoughts are with the displaced residents and their families, and we hope for a swift resolution to this distressing situation.
