In a recent development, the Chief Justice (CJ) along with the Judicial Secretary and the General Legal Council (GLC) have found themselves embroiled in a legal battle as they have been dragged to the Supreme Court for Contempt.

The lawsuit was filed by Kwame Aning Gyeabour, a private legal practitioner, who raised concerns about a Circular allegedly issued by the GLC instructing all Courts not to grant him an audience. Mr. Gyeabour, acting as the Plaintiff in the suit filed on February 26, 2024, contends that the actions of the GLC, CJ, and the Judicial Secretary were unlawful in their directive to the courts regarding his audience.

Seeking redress, Mr. Gyeabour has requested the Court to hold the Respondents – including the CJ, who serves as the chairman of the GLC and head of the judiciary, the Judicial Secretary, and the GLC itself – accountable by sentencing them to prison.

The motion for Contempt, as stated by Edward Sam Crabbe of CRABBE, CRABBE & CO., Counsel for the applicant, seeks the Court's intervention to ensure that the Respondents are held accountable for their actions. The motion also requests that the Respondents refrain from any attempts to revoke Mr. Gyeabour’s solicitors’ license.

This legal dispute raises important questions about the conduct of judicial authorities and the regulation of legal professionals in our country. It is imperative that such matters are adjudicated with utmost care and diligence to uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

As this case unfolds, it will be crucial to observe how the Court addresses the allegations of Contempt and how it seeks to uphold the integrity of the legal system. We will continue to monitor this case closely and provide updates as it progresses through the judicial process.
