We have received reports of a disturbing incident involving an individual claiming to be a soldier stationed at Airborne-Tamale. The Obuasi East Police Patrol Team in the Ashanti Region apprehended one Lance Corporal Opoku Eric, 27, who was allegedly involved in an attempted robbery at a mining site in Nyamesom near Kwabenakwa.

The suspect, who was on operations duty at Bawku and on fourteen days' leave, was found in the company of three others, all dressed in military uniforms and 'Jalabia' attire, armed with a pump action gun, knives, and other offensive weapons. They had entered the mining site amidst gunshots, causing alarm among the workers.

Upon receiving the information, the police swiftly responded to the scene and found the suspect in custody of civilians who had apprehended him. According to the suspect, he and his accomplices went to the mining site in search of money, fired a warning shot to intimidate the workers, and attempted to take a hostage. However, their actions were thwarted as the miners managed to apprehend the suspect while his colleagues escaped.

The police have since detained the individual for further investigation and are actively pursuing the other suspects involved in this incident. The suspect's claim of being a soldier stationed at Airborne-Tamale with staff ID No.AB699021 is also under scrutiny.

It is critical to emphasize that such actions are unacceptable and will be dealt with in accordance with the law. The safety and security of all individuals, as well as the integrity of military personnel, are of utmost importance.

As this case unfolds, we urge the public to remain vigilant and cooperative with law enforcement authorities. Any information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of the other suspects should be reported to the relevant authorities.

We commend the swift response of the Obuasi East Police Patrol Team and extend our gratitude to the civilians who assisted in apprehending the suspect. Their actions demonstrate the importance of community involvement in maintaining law and order.
