We have recently witnessed an unfortunate incident at the Bingo Bet Centre near Ashaiman Traffic, where a 32-year-old mason, Bernard Awaga, was granted bail in the sum of GH₵ 6,000.00 with one surety for assaulting a driver. The Ashaiman District Court, presided over by Mr Derick Pardden Eshun, granted bail to Awaga after he pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge of assault.
The court has also referred the case for alternative dispute resolution and adjourned it to June 17, 2024. According to Chief Inspector Patient Afi Blihia, prosecuting, the complainant, Mr James Kofi Zor, a driver, was assaulted on March 1, 2024, at about 1210 hours. The police were alerted by a witness and upon arrival at the scene, they found the complainant bleeding profusely from his nose and identified Awaga as the assailant.
It was reported that the altercation occurred when Awaga tapped the complainant, who was on a phone call, accusing him of stepping on his toe. Despite the complainant's apology and attempt to walk away, Awaga proceeded to slap him from behind, causing the complainant to bleed from his nose.
Following his arrest, Awaga pleaded for leniency and offered to assist the complainant in seeking medical care. However, the police intervened and took him into custody. During interrogations, Awaga admitted to assaulting the complainant out of anger.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means and exercising restraint in moments of provocation. We hope that through the legal process and alternative dispute resolution, justice will be served and both parties can find a resolution to this unfortunate event. Our thoughts are with Mr James Kofi Zor for a speedy recovery, and we urge everyone to seek an amicable resolution to conflicts in all circumstances.
