A 32-year-old Nigerian national, Pascal Okafor Ezugwu, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence by the Accra High Court after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle 90 thumb-sized cocaine pellets weighing 1.54 kg.

The sentencing, which took place on Friday, 3rd May 2024, also included a fine of ten thousand penalty units. In the event of default, Ezugwu will serve an additional three years in prison.

Ezugwu's arrest occurred on Wednesday, 21st February 2024, at the Kotoka International Airport by officers of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) as he was going through pre-boarding formalities at the departure hall to board a flight to Hanoi, Vietnam. A subsequent urine test revealed traces of narcotic substances, leading to the discovery of the 90 thumb-sized pellets during observation by officers. A field test confirmed that the pellets contained cocaine.

Following his arrest, Ezugwu was charged with three counts of narcotic offences relating to unlawful possession, attempted exportation of narcotic drugs, and money laundering. He pleaded guilty to all three counts and was consequently convicted on his own plea.

In addition to the prison sentence and fine, the court ordered the destruction of the confiscated exhibit, which will be supervised by all interested stakeholders in the presence of the court registrar, state prosecutors, and the defense counsel.

The NACOC has reiterated its commitment to protecting the public from the trafficking and use of illicit drugs, emphasizing that the possession, usage, and transportation of illegal drugs without lawful authorization remain prohibited under sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of Act 1019 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020. The commission urges the general public to be aware of the consequences and risks associated with such activities.

The NACOC's unwavering dedication to safeguarding public safety and combating drug-related crimes is commendable. By upholding the law and ensuring that those involved in illegal drug trade face appropriate consequences, the commission contributes to creating a safer and more secure environment for all members of society.

It is essential for individuals to be fully aware of the severe legal penalties associated with drug trafficking and to understand the detrimental impact of such activities on individuals, families, and communities. By promoting awareness and education about the risks and consequences of illicit drug involvement, we can work towards preventing future incidents and protecting our societies from harm.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Pascal Okafor Ezugwu serves as a clear example of the legal repercussions of drug trafficking and reinforces the ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trade. It also highlights the importance of international cooperation and emphasizes the need for public awareness about the dangers of drug-related activities.
