A military officer named Timothy Adzakosi, believed to be from Tarkwa-Aboso military quarters, was reportedly assaulted by assailants suspected to be illegal miners at Wassa Akyempim in the Western region on Friday, June 7, 2024.

The victim, along with three colleagues, visited a galamsey site in the area, where they were reportedly chased by a mob of illegal miners. The chase ended at a fuel-filling station in Wassa Akyempim, where the victim was beaten and sustained wounds on his hands.

Eyewitnesses reported that the military has been conducting visits to galamsey sites in the area, and the other officers fled the scene to avoid further attacks.

Upon hearing of the incident, the local Assembly Member and community chairman went to the aid of the victim, who was then taken to Wassa Ateiku Health Center for treatment. The police have launched investigations to locate the perpetrators, who are currently on the run.

Due to fear of reprisal attacks from the military, some residents are fleeing the town.
