We are deeply troubled to hear about the incident involving a 24-year-old man, David Boateng, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing a laptop from an artiste who had kindly offered him a place to stay. The Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Susan Eduful, convicted Boateng of the theft after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the artiste, Evans Kotey Djanie, had extended his hospitality to Boateng after the latter claimed to have come to Accra from Koforidua in search of work and a place to sleep. Tragically, Boateng abused this generosity by stealing a HP-branded laptop valued at GH¢3,500 from Djanie's residence while he was away for voice training.

What makes this case even more concerning is that Boateng brazenly returned to the scene of the crime, unknowingly encountering Djanie behind the Teshie Police Station and demanding money from him. Djanie astutely recognized Boateng and lured him towards a mobile money (Momo) vendor under the guise of providing him with money. When Boateng caught on to the ruse, he attempted to flee but was apprehended with the assistance of others in the vicinity.

In his statement to the police, Boateng admitted to the theft and led them to retrieve the stolen laptop from Ashaiman.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution, even towards those who seek our help. It also underscores the significance of swift and decisive action by law enforcement in apprehending perpetrators of theft and other crimes.

We hope that this verdict brings a sense of justice to Evans Kotey Djanie and serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar actions. Our thoughts are with Djanie as he navigates the aftermath of this distressing experience.

It is our sincere hope that incidents like these become increasingly rare, and that individuals in need are able to find assistance without resorting to criminal behavior.
