In a tragic incident, one individual has lost their life, and several others have sustained injuries following violent clashes in the Naniik and Binbagu communities of the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri District, located in the North East Region. This turmoil has been attributed to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute that has escalated into violence, resulting in the destruction of multiple homes.

According to reports from Channel One News, residents of the affected communities were forced to evacuate in a panic, leaving behind their possessions as they sought safety. The situation took a grave turn when the Youth Chief of Naniik was shot while accompanied by an individual named Elijah. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Elijah succumbed to his injuries at the scene, with his remains temporarily housed at the morgue of Binde hospital.

The violence did not cease with this incident. A subsequent attack occurred on Monday, September 23, during the preparations for Elijah's burial. This second wave of violence incited further anger within the Naniik community, leading to a retaliatory response that prompted residents from both communities to flee in fear for their safety.

In light of these developments, local authorities have implemented a curfew from 5:30 AM to 6 PM to restore order and prevent further escalation. The General Manager of Pib-ri FM, a community radio station in Binde-Bunkpurugu, Sunday Batowani, has reported that three individuals are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Additionally, there are reports of others suffering from snake bites sustained while escaping the violence on Monday night.

Efforts are underway to gather further information from the District Security Council regarding the measures being taken to restore peace and stability to the region. The situation remains tense, and the community is in urgent need of intervention to address the underlying issues contributing to this conflict.

As this story develops, it is imperative for local and national authorities to prioritize dialogue and conflict resolution strategies to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of all residents in the affected areas.
