In a recent capacity-building program for prosecuting attorneys, Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah issued a stern warning regarding the use of plea bargaining to shield criminals from justice.

Tuah-Yeboah emphasized that while the plea bargaining regime allows accused individuals to negotiate a change of charge to a lesser offense, seek a reduction in punishment, or have a charge withdrawn, it will not be applicable to individuals charged with serious offenses such as sexual offenses, election-related crimes, and similar grave infractions.

He stressed that the guidelines should not serve as an excuse for evading justice and cautioned the public against viewing the application of the Plea Bargaining Act as an attempt to undermine justice. Tuah-Yeboah made it clear that the law will be applied in appropriate cases and that the plea bargaining act will not be used as a shield for criminals to perpetuate their wrongful activities.

Addressing the prosecuting attorneys, he urged them to adhere strictly to the guidelines and ensure that only those deserving of the benefits of plea bargaining receive them. He also warned potential offenders that the plea bargaining act will not provide a safe haven for criminal activities.

It is evident from Tuah-Yeboah's remarks that the plea bargaining regime is intended to serve as a tool for fair and just legal proceedings, rather than a means for criminals to escape accountability. As such, it is crucial for all stakeholders in the justice system to uphold the integrity of plea bargaining and prevent its misuse.

The Deputy Attorney General's warning sends a clear message that the application of the law will be carried out with diligence and in the interest of upholding justice. It serves as a reminder that the legal system is committed to ensuring that plea bargaining is used responsibly and in accordance with its intended purpose.

In conclusion, the plea bargaining regime, under the guidance of Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, stands as a mechanism for achieving equitable legal outcomes. It is a tool designed to facilitate fair negotiations within the bounds of the law, and it will not be exploited to shield individuals involved in serious criminal activities.
