In a disturbing turn of events, the residence of Tolon Chief in Gurugu, Tamale, was attacked by unidentified individuals wielding guns and cutlasses. The Chief, Naa Mohammed Abdulai, had recently made a controversial political statement declaring support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP, while invoking curses on supporters of the opposition NDC.

The attack, which occurred on Wednesday evening, resulted in one person being injured. The victim, identified as Mashud, recounted the harrowing experience and revealed that the assailants were apparently targeting the Chief, mistakenly believing he was present at the residence.

This incident has exacerbated existing tensions in Gburmani following the Chief's incendiary remarks at a political rally. The NDC, in response to the Chief's statements, held a meeting and plans to petition the Ya Naa and the Dagbon Traditional Council to address the Chief's conduct.

In light of these events, it is crucial for traditional leaders to refrain from engaging in partisan politics. Ku’ga Naa Abdulai of the Dagbon Traditional Council has rightly condemned the Chief's statements and urged all traditional leaders to maintain impartiality and fairness in their interactions with political parties.

It is imperative for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize peaceful dialogue in addressing grievances. The raid on the Chief's residence is deplorable and must be thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the Chief's inflammatory rhetoric and the subsequent attack serve as a stark reminder of the need for responsible and measured discourse, particularly in the lead-up to elections.

As the nation prepares for upcoming elections, it is essential for all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, political parties, and law enforcement agencies, to work together to ensure a peaceful and conducive environment for political activities. Any form of violence or intimidation has no place in a democratic society and must be unequivocally condemned.

It is our hope that the relevant authorities will swiftly address this concerning situation and take concrete steps to prevent any further escalation of tensions. The safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their political affiliations, must be safeguarded, and the rule of law upheld at all times.
