In a recent development pertaining to the Democracy Hub protests, seven out of the 53 protesters facing trial have been discharged by the state. This decision came after 19 of the protesters appeared in court subsequent to their release from custody.
The individuals who have been discharged are Kingsley Adiedu, Seth Cofie, Gloria Louis, Nii Quaye Hammond, Manuel Biney, Joseph Dorsese, and Ernest Acheampong.
State attorneys have officially announced the discontinuation of the trial against these seven protesters. Additionally, they have confirmed the filing of a second batch of disclosures and indicated their intention to submit witness statements on the next adjourned date, which has been set for November 21, 2024.
Nicholas Normeshie, the legal representative for the discharged protesters, has expressed satisfaction with the state’s decision. He has reiterated the innocence of his clients and expressed skepticism regarding the possibility of their re-arrest.
In his statement, Normeshie remarked, “The state made the right decision to drop the charges against these seven clients, as they were innocent of the accusations. From the state’s position, I highly doubt they will be re-arrested. If that were the case, it would have happened immediately after the court session.”
As the case progresses, the remaining protesters will continue to face trial in the coming weeks.
This development marks a significant turn of events in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the Democracy Hub protests. The discharged individuals can now look forward to moving past this chapter, while the focus shifts to the remaining defendants as they navigate the trial process.
We will continue to monitor and report on any further updates as this situation unfolds.
