Ghana Police Arrest 89 Following Election Day Violence

Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of 89 individuals in connection with various offenses committed during the aftermath of the 2024 general elections. 



 In a press briefing on Monday, December 9th, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, revealed that 40 of the suspects are directly linked to acts of vandalism, looting, and property destruction. 

 

The arrests follow reports of isolated incidents of violence and property damage in several locations across the country.  While the Police emphasized that these incidents were limited, they stressed their commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice.  ACP Ansah-Akrofi stated that all 89 suspects are in custody and will face legal action.

 

The Police have implemented several security measures to maintain peace and order in the post-election period. These include:

 

- Increased police visibility:  Intensified patrols are being conducted in various locations, working in collaboration with other security agencies.

- Intelligence-led operations:  The Police are utilizing intelligence to identify and apprehend offenders within communities.

- Static security at key facilities:  Security has been strengthened at vulnerable state facilities to prevent further vandalism or looting.

- Stakeholder engagement:  The Police are engaging with government officials and other stakeholders to address concerns and ensure smooth operations.

- Special investigations: A dedicated team is reviewing video evidence and other materials to identify and hold accountable all those involved in the violence. 

 

ACP Ansah-Akrofi issued a strong warning to the public, urging individuals to refrain from any further acts of violence.  She emphasized that perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  

The Police expressed gratitude for the cooperation of Ghanaians throughout the election process and assured the public of their continued commitment to safety and security.
