In a significant operation conducted in the early hours of yesterday, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) apprehended 50 Nigerian nationals, including the landlord of the premises where they were allegedly engaging in illegal activities. The operation took place at McCarthy Hills in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region and was initiated based on intelligence gathered regarding the illegal stay of foreign nationals in the area.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that some of these individuals were trafficked into Ghana and coerced into cyber fraud by their facilitators. The GIS has assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
This decisive action underscores the commitment of Ghana’s immigration authorities to combat unlawful activities and protect the nation’s security. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in addressing human trafficking and cybercrime within the region.
A Warning Against Fraudulent Social Media Accounts
In a separate development, the GIS has issued a caution to the public regarding fraudulent social media accounts impersonating the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu. These accounts, particularly on Facebook, have been flagged for using images of the CGI to deceive and mislead unsuspecting individuals.
Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Michael Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs at GIS, firmly stated that Mr. Amadu does not own or operate any Facebook account. He urged the public to refrain from engaging with these fraudulent platforms, as doing so may expose them to risks such as scams or identity theft.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the Comptroller-General of Immigration does not own or operate any Facebook account, and the public is strongly advised not to engage with them,” ACI Amoako-Atta emphasized.
The Comptroller-General has completely disassociated himself from these fraudulent accounts and reiterated that any interaction with such platforms is done at one’s own risk. The GIS Management remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of its operations and protecting citizens from falling victim to online fraud.
Call to Action
The Ghana Immigration Service continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring national security and upholding immigration laws. As investigations into the McCarthy Hills operation unfold, it is imperative for citizens to remain informed and vigilant. Furthermore, individuals are encouraged to report suspicious social media accounts or activities to relevant authorities to help curb online fraud.
The GIS remains steadfast in its mission to ensure safety, security, and transparency across all its operations, while fostering trust and cooperation with the public. Together, these efforts contribute to a safer and more secure Ghana for all.
