In the lead-up to the Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued a firm warning against any acts of violence or disruption during the electoral process. Speaking at the Police Training School in Kyerematen, Eastern Region, Mr. Yohuno underscored the Ghana Police Service's commitment to maintaining peace and order before, during, and after the polls.

The IGP assured the public that the Service is fully prepared to address any situation that may arise in Akwatia, emphasizing the readiness of both personnel and resources. "We want to assure Ghanaians that the police are ready to handle any situation that may arise in Akwatia. We have the men, we have the resources, and our eyes are red for Akwatia. Nobody should think of causing trouble," he stated.

 Strengthened Security Measures

To ensure the smooth conduct of the by-election, Mr. Yohuno disclosed that robust security measures have been implemented. Political parties and stakeholders have been briefed on these measures to foster understanding and cooperation. The IGP specifically cautioned against activities such as ballot box snatching, mobilizing groups to foment confusion, or disrupting the electoral process in any way.

In a decisive move to reinforce order, the Ghana Police Service will deploy special prison trucks, commonly referred to as "Black Marias," to the constituency. These vehicles will serve as mobile detention facilities for individuals who attempt to cause trouble during the election. "We are going in with Black Marias, the prison on wheels. Anyone who causes trouble will be picked up, kept inside, and later transferred to the police cells," Mr. Yohuno explained.

 Call for Cooperation

The Ghana Police Service has appealed to all citizens, political parties, and actors involved in the election to cooperate fully in ensuring a peaceful process. The Service remains resolute in its mission to safeguard democracy and uphold public safety during this critical period.

The upcoming Akwatia by-election is an opportunity for Ghana to demonstrate its commitment to free, fair, and peaceful elections. With the police force on high alert and stringent measures in place, stakeholders are urged to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

As September 2 approaches, all eyes will be on Akwatia. The Ghana Police Service’s proactive stance serves as a reminder that violence has no place in democratic processes. Let us work together to uphold the values of peace and unity that define our nation.
