The Blue Water Guards, operating under the Prestea Huni Valley Municipal Assembly, have successfully disrupted the activities of illegal miners whose operations were significantly contributing to the deterioration of the River Ankobra's water quality. The intervention comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and protect vital water bodies in the region.
The operation was carried out in Bayerigya, a community within the Prestea Huni Valley municipality. Shockingly, the illegal mining site had been established openly along the main road connecting Hiawa to Bayerigya, with activities conducted in plain view of local residents. The miners had also constructed an outlet to channel wastewater directly into the Ankobra River, causing debris and silt to pollute the water body.
During the enforcement exercise, the Blue Water Guards confiscated two water pumping machines and destroyed washing boards along with other mining equipment used for the illegal operations. However, no arrests were made, as the miners fled upon noticing the presence of the task force.
Commander of the Blue Water Guards, Mr. Allan Acheampong, reaffirmed his team’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities along the Ankobra River. He emphasized that their mission is to restore and safeguard the river from further degradation.
"We are committed to safeguarding and restoring the Ankobra River. That is our goal, and we will go to every length within our means to achieve it," Mr. Acheampong stated. He further declared a renewed war on illegal mining in the area and assured residents that his team would not relent in their efforts.
As part of preventive measures, Mr. Acheampong pledged to maintain 24-hour surveillance at the site to deter miners from returning. This proactive strategy underscores the assembly's dedication to ensuring that such harmful activities are permanently curtailed.
The Ankobra River is a vital natural resource for communities in the region, serving as a source of water for domestic and agricultural purposes. However, its turbidity levels have been severely impacted by illegal mining activities, posing significant environmental and public health risks.
The actions of the Blue Water Guards are part of broader national efforts to address environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, also known as "galamsey," which continues to be a pressing challenge in Ghana. Local authorities and stakeholders have been urged to collaborate and support initiatives aimed at protecting natural resources and ensuring sustainable development in affected communities.
