In an unexpected turn of events, the lawyer representing Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has officially withdrawn his services amidst an ongoing trial. Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi and the Fund's Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, are currently facing allegations of causing a $2 million financial loss to the state. The case revolves around a transaction related to the development of an urban sky train system in Accra.

The two accused are facing six charges, including conspiracy, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds. Both Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and Mr. Asamoah have pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against them.

 A Sudden Legal Withdrawal

The case was called before the High Court on Monday, October 13, at 12:06 PM, with the prosecution prepared to call its first witness. While counsel for Mr. Asamoah was present in court, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi appeared without legal representation. This prompted the presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, to inquire about the absence of his lawyer.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi explained that there had been a misunderstanding with his lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, which was being addressed through mediation. However, shortly thereafter, a court clerk informed the judge of a formal letter submitted by Mr. Sasu, indicating his withdrawal from representing Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi.

"Your lawyer has written a letter that he is no longer representing you," Justice Kocuvie-Tay informed the accused during the proceedings.

 Legal Maneuvers by Co-Defendant’s Counsel

Meanwhile, legal representatives for Mr. Asamoah, led by lawyer Victoria Barth, have filed an application for a stay of proceedings. This move seeks to halt the trial pending the resolution of an appeal against the court's decision to dismiss their motion for further disclosures. The application is scheduled to be heard on October 20, 2025.

This development adds another layer of complexity to an already high-profile case that has drawn significant public attention due to its implications for government accountability and financial transparency.

Adjournment and Next Steps

In light of these developments, the court has adjourned the case to allow time for several key actions. The defence team for Mr. Asamoah is expected to serve the prosecution with their application for a stay of proceedings. Additionally, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi has been given time to secure new legal representation in order to ensure his right to a fair trial is upheld.

The adjournment reflects the court's commitment to facilitating due process while navigating the challenges posed by these recent legal developments.

Conclusion

As this case progresses, it underscores the importance of legal representation and procedural fairness in high-stakes trials involving allegations of financial misconduct. The withdrawal of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi's lawyer introduces new uncertainties into the proceedings, which are being closely monitored by stakeholders and the public alike.

The trial is expected to resume after these procedural matters are addressed, with both defendants maintaining their innocence. The outcome of this case will likely have far-reaching implications for governance and financial oversight in Ghana. Stay tuned for further updates as this legal drama unfolds.
