In an alarming incident that has captured public attention, the Airport Divisional Police Command in Accra has arrested two nannies for allegedly administering sleep-inducing medication to their employer's two-year-old twin sons. The shocking revelations have sparked widespread concern and highlighted the need for vigilance in supervising domestic staff.

The suspects, identified as Francisca Boakye, a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region, have reportedly confessed to other forms of physical and emotional abuse against the toddlers during their eight-month tenure. According to the police, the abuse extended beyond drugging the children to include burning their hands with fire and subjecting them to derogatory insults, referring to them with terms such as "chimpanzee."

The case came to light when the mother of the children, a 41-year-old businesswoman, began noticing unusual signs in September 2025. The twins exhibited abnormal drowsiness and behavioral changes, prompting her to investigate further. Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Director of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, revealed that subsequent inquiries uncovered that the nannies had been administering a medication suspected to be "Dynewell" without the mother's consent. This medication allegedly caused prolonged sleep in the children, enabling the nannies to focus on other household chores.

A police search of the suspects' living quarters uncovered disturbing evidence, including two used and four unused trays of sachet-pack substances believed to have been used to drug the children. Both suspects have been cautioned and charged with appropriate offenses. They have been remanded by the court and are scheduled to reappear on October 20, 2025.

Superintendent Obeng condemned these "inhumane acts" and urged parents and guardians to exercise greater vigilance when supervising domestic staff. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from harm and ensuring that those entrusted with their care are properly vetted and monitored.

This distressing case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities children face in domestic settings. It underscores the necessity for parents and guardians to remain proactive in observing any changes in their children's behavior and health. Domestic staff play an integral role in many households, but their responsibilities must be accompanied by trustworthiness and accountability.

As society grapples with this unsettling incident, it is imperative to foster conversations around child safety and domestic staff regulations. Authorities must prioritize stringent measures to prevent such occurrences and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

Let this case serve as a wake-up call for all caregivers and parents to remain vigilant and protective of their children. The well-being of our youngest members is a collective responsibility that requires constant attention and care.
