In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, security personnel in Nkwanta, located in Ghana's Oti Region, intercepted a substantial cache of ammunition during two separate intelligence-driven operations on May 17, 2026. First Operation: Discovery on a 66-Seater Bus
The first operation took place at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta, where authorities intercepted a 66-seater MGI bus with registration number AS 248-P. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag and packed into three brown boxes, each containing 250 rounds of ammunition.
One suspect, identified as Hudu Mahama, a 53-year-old serving as the driver’s mate on the bus, was arrested at the scene. Preliminary interrogation revealed that Mahama admitted ownership of the ammunition. His arrest marks a significant step in addressing the illegal transport of dangerous materials within the region.
Second Operation: Ammunition Recovered After High-Speed Chase
In a separate but related operation on the same day, a joint Police and Military team pursued an unidentified suspect riding a motorbike. During the chase, one box containing 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges fell from the motorbike and was subsequently retrieved by security personnel. However, the suspect managed to escape with a second box of ammunition.
Further investigations led to the arrest of another individual, identified as Christian Kwasi Alonise, aged 57. Both suspects are currently in custody and assisting authorities with their investigations. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to locate the missing box of ammunition and apprehend the fleeing rider.
