Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into the death of 16-year-old Ransford Owusu, a junior footballer with Siano Soccer Academy in Accra. The investigation was triggered by allegations that Owusu suffered sexual abuse at the hands of his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, prior to his death.

According to a statement released by the Police, preliminary investigations began after the deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, reported the incident to the Amasaman Police in February 2025. Asantewaa stated that her son passed away on February 28, 2025, after a period of illness. She further alleged that Ransford had confided in her about being sexually abused by his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, before his death.

The case has now been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for a more thorough investigation.

Police confirmed that the suspect, Anyass Ibrahim, was arrested on November 4, 2025, to assist with the investigation. Following interrogation and the recording of his statement, Ibrahim was granted bail but is required to report regularly to the CID Headquarters.

Medical reports submitted by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Children’s Hospital) in Kumasi indicate that Ransford Owusu was treated for liver and kidney-related conditions before his death. The Police are currently working to obtain official medical reports from both hospitals to verify these findings. A court order has been obtained to compel the hospitals to release the necessary documents after initial requests were denied.

The investigation has been broadened following the emergence of a viral video allegedly showing the suspect, Ibrahim, in a compromising situation with a minor. This development has added another layer of complexity to the case.

The Police Service is appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with credible information related to the case is urged to contact the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or report to the nearest Police Station. The Police have assured the public that all information received will be treated with the strictest confidence as they work to uncover the truth behind the tragic death of Ransford Owusu.
