The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has confirmed that the Ghana Police Service has initiated an investigation into allegations that an American tourist was kidnapped and extorted by individuals purportedly posing as police officers.
In a press statement released on December 8, 2025, the GTA stated that the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Cyber Security Authority, is treating the matter with utmost urgency. The authorities have pledged to provide timely updates upon the conclusion of their investigation.
The GTA's statement sought to reassure tourists and the general public, emphasizing Ghana's continued commitment to safety and security.
"Our security systems…supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners, have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort, and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season… Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety," the statement affirmed.
The GTA has urged visitors requiring assistance or information to contact the Authority directly at 0579579019 or 030 700 7100, or via WhatsApp at 0546352240.
This investigation was prompted by a viral video in which an American woman, who was visiting Ghana for the "Detty December" festivities, claimed that uniformed police officers extorted approximately $400 from her. The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited as it could have significant implications for Ghana's tourism sector.
