Accra, Ghana – His Honour Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah, presiding over Circuit Court 6 in Accra, has granted bail to Augustine Opoku Anaman, a 40-year-old travel agent, who is accused of defrauding two individuals under the guise of securing foreign visas.
Anaman pleaded not guilty to two counts of defrauding by false pretences. The court admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified. The case has been adjourned to January 21, 2026. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Abel Amanie, under the supervision of DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, has been ordered to file all disclosures.
The accused is alleged to have defrauded Elizabeth Tieku, a banker residing in Osu, of GH¢30,000 with the promise of securing a United States visa. He is also accused of defrauding Kwasi Kayi, a carpenter from Kasoa Ofankor, of GH¢48,000 under the pretense of acquiring a Canadian visa. The prosecution asserts that Anaman knew these representations to be false.
Both counts are in contravention of Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the prosecution, the complainants approached Anaman in 2024 at his office on Kasoa New Market Road, seeking assistance with their travel plans. Anaman allegedly presented himself as a reputable travel agent capable of securing visas to various destinations. He reportedly charged GH¢60,000 for the U.S. visa application and GH¢100,000 for the Canadian package, collecting initial commitment fees of GH¢30,000 and GH¢48,000, respectively. He allegedly promised to deliver the visas within four months.
The prosecution further stated that Anaman failed to fulfill his promises and subsequently went into hiding. Following reports from the complainants, police apprehended him at a hideout in Winneba.
In his caution statement, Anaman admitted to receiving the funds but did not provide an explanation for their use. Investigators have indicated that additional complaints have been lodged against him, and inquiries are ongoing.
The case is scheduled to resume in January next year for further proceedings.
