In a commendable move to recognize bravery and dedication in law enforcement, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted 17 police personnel to their next ranks. The officers, hailing from the Volta and Ashanti Regional Police Commands, were celebrated for their exceptional commitment to duty and their role in critical operations.

The promotions were announced during two separate ceremonies held in the Volta and Ashanti regions over the course of two days. The Volta region saw thirteen officers promoted, while four officers from the Ashanti region were similarly honored. These events highlighted the courage and professionalism displayed by the officers in the face of challenging situations.

Heroic Operations in the Line of Duty

The first notable operation took place on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, along the Accra-Aflao highway at Kpotame. Acting on intelligence, a taskforce comprising personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), and the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) intercepted a Nigeria-bound Liberty Jeep. Upon inspection, the team discovered a consignment of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, valued at approximately GHC1,032,650.00.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Adenkule, 46, attempted to bribe the officers with $20,000. However, their integrity remained unwavering as they refused the bribe and proceeded to arrest the suspect. He was subsequently taken to Ho, the regional capital, for further interrogation.

In another significant operation on Friday, January 23, 2026, a joint team from PID, DLEU, and the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) set up a snap checkpoint at OLA TOP in Ho following intelligence on narcotic drug transportation. A Ghana Health Service (GHS) Ford bus was signaled to stop but sped off instead. The vehicle was later intercepted, and a search revealed 26 maxi sacks containing 2,045 yellow oval-shaped parcels of compressed leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp. The street value of the narcotics was estimated at GHC1,022,500.00. The driver, Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, 38, an employee of the GHS, was apprehended and is currently assisting with investigations.

Confrontation in Ashanti South Region

On the same day, January 23, 2026, police officers in Jacobu, Bepotenten Sukuum in the Ashanti South police region faced a dangerous confrontation. While conducting patrols, they recovered a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy and instructed him to have the owner present proper documentation to the police.

However, as they returned from patrols, a group of approximately 100 individuals armed with cutlasses and firearms confronted them. The crowd assaulted the officers and seized a service rifle. In the ensuing confrontation, one assailant who had taken possession of the service weapon was shot by police while another individual sustained injuries. The service rifle was successfully recovered during this tense encounter.

Recognition and Future Considerations

The bravery displayed by these officers has not gone unnoticed. In addition to their promotions, three senior police officers from the various teams involved in these operations have been referred to the Appointments and Promotions Advisory Board (APAB) for further consideration.

These promotions serve as a testament to the commitment of law enforcement personnel who put their lives on the line to ensure public safety and uphold justice. Their courage and integrity exemplify the highest standards expected of those who serve in uniform.

As these officers take on their new roles with higher ranks, their dedication and valor will undoubtedly continue to inspire their colleagues and reinforce public trust in law enforcement agencies across Ghana.
