The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced that the Ghana Police Service has successfully conducted security assessments for all voting centres ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming flagbearer elections, with the exception of the Bawku area. The elections, a crucial step in determining the party's leadership, are set to take place in January 2026.
Speaking at a peace pact signing ceremony attended by all five NPP flagbearer aspirants, the IGP highlighted the steps taken to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process. He noted that while security arrangements are fully in place for most voting centres, the Bawku enclave presents unique challenges due to prevailing security concerns in the area.
To address this situation, the Ghana Police Service has formally requested additional military assistance. "The Police Service has formally written to the Minister for the Interior to liaise with the Minister of Defence to ensure military assistance during the exercise in Bawku," the IGP stated. This collaboration underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout the electoral process.
The IGP assured the public and party stakeholders that aside from Bawku, all other voting centres would have adequate police presence to safeguard voters, election officials, and materials. The proactive measures are part of broader efforts to ensure that the elections are conducted in a peaceful and transparent manner.
The peace pact signing ceremony also saw remarks from NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who emphasised the importance of unity within the party. He urged all candidates to prioritise cohesion and mutual respect, reminding them that the eventual flagbearer would require the full support of party members to secure victory in the 2028 general elections.
In a show of solidarity and commitment to fostering internal harmony, all five aspirants signed the peace pact. This symbolic gesture is aimed at preventing internal tensions and ensuring a united front as the party prepares for its primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The NPP's efforts to promote unity and maintain peace during this critical period reflect a broader commitment to democratic principles and stability within Ghana's political landscape. As the party gears up for its flagbearer elections, all eyes will be on how these security measures and unity initiatives contribute to a smooth and successful electoral process.
