In a significant operation aimed at curbing the unlawful transportation of ammunition, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command successfully apprehended three individuals in connection with the possession and movement of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. The arrests were made at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region on December 26, 2025.
The suspects include Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, his assistant, who were intercepted while traveling in a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18. The vehicle was en route from Accra through Walewale to Paga when police officers conducted a search that led to the discovery of two concealed containers loaded with ammunition.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a third suspect, Mohammed Sisu, aged 21, who was allegedly the intended recipient of the consignment. He was apprehended on December 27, 2025, at Walewale when he arrived to collect the illicit cargo.
In addition to the ammunition, law enforcement officers confiscated two bulletproof plates, a crushed black helmet, and a pair of long boots hidden under the driver’s seat of the vehicle. These items are believed to be related to the suspects’ activities and have been impounded alongside the bus.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations into the matter. This operation underscores the commitment of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command to ensuring public safety and preventing the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition.
The successful interception of this consignment is a testament to the vigilance and dedication of law enforcement personnel in combating criminal activities. Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and security across the region.
Further updates on this case will be communicated as investigations progress.
