In a decisive move to address the pressing issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, the National Security Secretariat in the Ashanti Region has instituted a one-month ban on all mining activities and the movement of excavators within the Juaben Municipality. This initiative, which will be in effect throughout the month of July, is part of a broader strategy aimed at combating illegal mining and facilitating land reclamation efforts.
The announcement was made by Alhaji Nji Abdallah Umar, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, following an inspection tour of various mining sites within the municipality. During this tour, it became evident that immediate action was necessary to restore lands that have been severely degraded by mining activities and to rehabilitate affected water bodies.
Alhaji Umar emphasized that during this period, no mining operations or movement of excavators will be permitted. He further stated that security agencies have been assigned the responsibility of ensuring strict compliance with this directive. "The Regional Minister, who chairs both the Regional Coordinating Council and the Regional Security Council, has declared that from today, Wednesday, until the end of next month, all mining activities in the Juaben Municipality are prohibited. Our primary goal is to see the reclamation of pits and the restoration of degraded lands," he stated.
This temporary ban is indicative of the Ashanti Regional Security Council's commitment to addressing environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities. By dedicating this period to land reclamation, the council aims to not only restore the ecological balance but also set a precedent for sustainable mining practices in the future.
The decision underscores the urgency with which regional authorities are tackling the environmental challenges posed by illegal mining. It reflects a broader understanding that sustainable development cannot be achieved without first addressing the environmental damage caused by such activities.
As the directive takes effect, stakeholders and residents within the Juaben Municipality are urged to cooperate with authorities to ensure the success of this initiative. The hope is that through collective effort and strict enforcement, the region can reclaim its lands and restore its natural resources for future generations.
