In a significant crackdown on illegal firearms and ammunition, the police in Accra have apprehended a total of 64 individuals at Achimota, a suburb of the city. This operation was conducted in response to mounting concerns from local residents about suspected criminal activities at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7, located in the Greater Accra Region. The police intervention was aimed at addressing the open display and potential trafficking of firearms in the area.
The operation, which took place on the evening of September 25, 2026, led to the identification of a suspicious blue, unregistered Honda Acura vehicle. Inside the vehicle, law enforcement personnel discovered a pistol holster. Despite efforts to ascertain ownership, no individual at the scene claimed responsibility for the holster. Consequently, the vehicle was impounded and transported to Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Among those detained, a suspect named Theophilus Ashon falsely identified himself as a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Operations. However, subsequent verification by the police revealed that Ashon was not affiliated with the police force. A search of his person resulted in the discovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol, which was loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Further investigative efforts led the police to Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was taken into custody. A thorough search of Mills' residence yielded a substantial cache of firearms and ammunition, including three pump action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, and 54 rounds of 40 calibre ammunition, along with additional evidence.
The apprehended suspects are currently in police custody and are actively cooperating with ongoing investigations. Authorities have indicated that these individuals will be brought before the court to face charges related to their unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
This operation underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies in Accra to combat illegal activities and enhance public safety. The police continue to urge residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities to aid in maintaining peace and security.
