We are pleased to announce that Parliament’s Committee on Defence and Interior has taken a significant step in addressing the unfortunate events that occurred in Ashaiman on March 7, 2023. Following the tragic death of a soldier in the area, a military operation led to the brutalization of civilians, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation.

In a recent report issued by the committee, it has been recommended that the individuals who suffered injuries as a result of the military action should be promptly and adequately compensated by the state. Furthermore, the committee has called for compensation to also cover those individuals whose properties were destroyed during the military operation.

The committee's stance on the matter is clear and unwavering. It unequivocally condemns the use of excessive force against civilians and expresses a strong aversion to any form of torturous treatment of civilians by the military and other security agencies. This firm stance sends a powerful message about the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring the protection of civilians, even in the face of challenging circumstances.

Additionally, the committee has urged the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to take proactive measures in educating personnel about the legal obligations and consequences associated with their actions. This emphasis on legal awareness and accountability is crucial in preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future and promoting a culture of respect for human rights and the rule of law within the armed forces.

It is heartening to see such decisive action being taken to address this troubling issue. The committee's recommendations reflect a commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of civilian lives and property. We hope that these recommendations will be swiftly implemented and serve as a positive step towards healing and reconciliation for the affected individuals and the community as a whole.
