We are deeply saddened by the recent attack on a bus carrying students of the Presbyterian Nurses Training College, Bawku. The incident, which occurred near Binduri in the Upper East region on Friday, January 19, has once again brought to light the security challenges facing the area.
Injuries and Response
According to Bawku Central Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga, the injuries sustained by the students were gunshot related, and they have been swiftly transported to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital for urgent medical attention. This comes in the wake of another tragic event earlier in the week, where two individuals lost their lives and four others were injured due to gunfire at a community center in Bawku.
Condemnation and Call for Action
Mr. Ayariga has rightly condemned these acts as dastardly and unacceptable, calling for immediate action by law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators. The renewal of the curfew hours in Bawku Municipality and its environs by the Minister for the Interior underscores the gravity of the security situation in the region.
Government Intervention and Stakeholder Involvement
In response to these distressing events, the government has issued a total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapon in the affected communities and their environs. It is imperative for all stakeholders, including Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and the youth, to exercise restraint and seek peaceful means to address the challenges facing the area.
The safety and well-being of the residents, particularly the students and innocent civilians, must be prioritized, and concerted efforts are required to restore peace and security in Bawku and its environs. Our thoughts are with the victims of these senseless acts, and we urge for swift justice to be served.
It is our hope that through collaborative efforts between the authorities and the community, lasting solutions can be found to prevent further loss of lives and ensure a secure environment for all.
