We have recently witnessed a concerning incident in the Akyem Oda Divisional Police Command involving the arrest of Nana Afia Henewaa Adontehemaa of Akyem Akroso and Solomon Obeng Asante, the campaign manager for New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant Alex Owusu Adjei.
The arrests were made following a press conference held by supporters of the parliamentary aspirant, expressing their disapproval of the abrupt change of venue for the primaries. The venue was shifted from the Akroso Presbyterian School to a secluded area at Akyem Batabi, prompting questions and concerns from the aspirant's supporters.
During an interview with the media, Nana Afia Henewaa Adontehemaa raised doubts about the impartiality of the police commander in relation to the change of venue, insinuating potential bias in favor of the current Member of Parliament, George Kwame Aboagye, also known as Oluwa.
In response to her comments, the Divisional Police Commander Rev.Dr.Adane-Ameyaw ordered her arrest, and she was subjected to vilification and offensive verbal insults during the process. Solomon Obeng Asante, the campaign manager, was also arrested when he attempted to secure bail for Nana Afia Henewaa Adontehemaa.
Subsequently, both individuals were detained, and there are reports indicating that they experienced health issues, including a rise in blood pressure. Furthermore, allegations have surfaced regarding their mistreatment, including being handcuffed to a hospital bed against protocol. Additionally, a physical altercation occurred between the Queen mother and the police, resulting in injuries to her hand.
Following their detention, Nana Afia Henewaa Adontehemaa and Solomon Obeng Asante were released late at night with an obligation to report to the police on Monday morning.
This incident has contributed to heightened tensions in the Asene Manso Akroso constituency, with supporters of Alex Owusu Adjei expressing suspicions of a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the delegates through the change of venue.
It is essential for all parties involved to exercise restraint and uphold the principles of fairness and justice as this situation unfolds. The authorities should conduct a thorough investigation into the events that transpired and ensure that due process is followed in addressing any grievances.
We urge for a peaceful resolution to this matter and emphasize the importance of upholding the democratic process with integrity and transparency. It is crucial that all individuals involved are treated with respect and dignity, and that their rights are safeguarded throughout this process.
As developments continue to unfold, we hope for a swift and equitable resolution that upholds the values of democracy and justice.
