We are on the brink of a significant event in the history of our nation, as Ghana prepares for the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024. The responsibility of ensuring a secure and fair electoral process rests heavily on the shoulders of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Ghana Police Service.

At the recent passing-out parade for one hundred and eighty-seven (187) graduates and general recruits from the Koforidua Police Training School, COP Abiba Yaa Twumasi-Sarpong, the Director General of Police Welfare at the Ghana Police Service, delivered a compelling address. Her words resonated with the gravity of the task at hand, emphasizing the importance of upholding public trust and respecting the human rights of all citizens, especially in the context of an impending national election.

COP Twumasi-Sarpong's message serves as a poignant reminder to the newly graduated recruits that their role in enforcing security laws during the elections must be carried out with fairness and an unwavering commitment to upholding human rights. This is not just a professional duty but a fundamental obligation to the democratic principles upon which our nation stands.

Furthermore, she reassured the public that comprehensive measures are being implemented by the police service in collaboration with sister security services to ensure a secure environment for the elections. The establishment of an election security secretariat, dedicated to overseeing all election-related security matters, underscores the meticulous planning and execution of security measures being undertaken.

Under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the vision for the Ghana Police Service is ambitious yet resolute. The aim is to position the service as a premier institution in Ghana and a reference point in Africa and beyond. The positive outcomes of recent training reforms are evident, with an emphasis not only on theoretical knowledge but also on practical field training activities essential for effective law enforcement.

The recruits have undergone comprehensive training encompassing a wide array of skills and competencies, ranging from crowd control to human rights, from incident and disaster management to professional police ethics. COP Twumasi-Sarpong rightfully expects nothing less than a high standard of professionalism and integrity from these new recruits, aligning with the overarching goal of maintaining law, order, and security in the country.

It is crucial for these new members of the Ghana Police Service to internalize the fact that their conduct will be under constant public scrutiny. As sworn servants of the people, they carry a profound responsibility to serve diligently and with utmost integrity.

As we stand on the threshold of this pivotal moment, let us collectively uphold the values of democracy, integrity, and respect for human rights. The Ghana Police Service, alongside other security agencies, plays a pivotal role in safeguarding these values, particularly during critical junctures such as national elections. Let us rally behind the commitment articulated by COP Abiba Yaa Twumasi-Sarpong and strive for a peaceful, secure, and transparent electoral process that truly reflects the will of the Ghanaian people.
