Nii Armah Ashitey, a former Assembly member for the Adobetor electoral area in La Dadekotpon Municipality, has been brought before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of defrauding by false pretence, using public office for profit, and money laundering. The 63-year-old ex-assembly member has pleaded not guilty to the various charges.

It is alleged that Ashitey was given GH¢500,000 by the Robert Vogel Memorial Foundation to construct a road and drainage within the community, but failed to do so. The prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong stated that Ashitey claimed to have used the money for the "mobilization of the project" but could not provide any documentation or receipts to support this claim.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, has granted Ashitey bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. The case has been adjourned to April 2, 2024, as investigations continue.

According to the prosecution, the Robert Vogel Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization engaged in philanthropic activities within the community, approached Ashitey with the intention of constructing a road and drainage. It is alleged that Ashitey took advantage of this opportunity and deceived the foundation into transferring GH¢500,000 into his personal account, which he presented as the Municipal Assembly's account.

Despite claiming to have the capacity to undertake the construction, it is asserted that Ashitey failed to fulfill this obligation. Investigations revealed that the road and drainage were not constructed despite the funds being disbursed. The prosecution further stated that Ashitey, by virtue of his position as an elected assembly member, was considered a public officer and had used his office for personal gain.

The case underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in public office and serves as a reminder of the legal repercussions for those who misuse their positions for personal benefit. As the legal process unfolds, it is imperative that justice is served and that measures are taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The allegations against Ashitey are serious and reflect the need for stringent oversight and ethical conduct in public service. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have implications for governance and accountability within local communities. It is essential for public officials to uphold the trust placed in them and to act in the best interests of the communities they serve.

As the legal proceedings progress, it is crucial for all relevant parties to cooperate with the authorities to ensure a fair and just resolution. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaching public trust and the importance of upholding integrity in public office.
