We are deeply concerned about the recent incident involving Benjamin Tetteh, a mechanic who has been accused of snatching two mobile phones from individuals in traffic at Community 18, Lashibi. Tetteh has been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court, while his alleged accomplice, Aziz, remains at large.

Tetteh is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing. However, the prosecution has expressed the intention to amend the charges to include robbery, based on a careful perusal of the case docket.

According to the prosecution, the first complainant, Morris Gaussou, was walking along the Community 18 stretch when the accused persons on an unregistered black Yamaha motorbike snatched his iPhone, valued at GHC3,000, as well as the second complainant’s Infinix smartphone, valued at GHC2,000. The incident occurred at the Devtraco Junction around 7:20 pm on February 14, 2024.

Fortunately, the accused persons were apprehended after the first complainant drove and knocked them down with his car. While Aziz managed to escape, Tetteh was detained to assist in investigations. However, Tetteh has denied the offence in his cautioned statement and failed to assist the police in arresting Aziz.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and vigilance, especially in high-traffic areas. We commend the actions of the first complainant in apprehending the accused individuals and cooperating with law enforcement.

As the legal proceedings continue, we trust that the justice system will ensure a fair and thorough investigation into this matter. Our thoughts are with the victims of this incident, and we hope for a swift resolution and appropriate recourse for all those affected.
