In a recent incident that has sparked concern, a 51-year-old ‘trotro’ driver named Michael Oppong has been remanded into Police custody by the Ashaiman Circuit Court. This comes after he allegedly stabbed a passenger with a knife over an additional 50 pesewas lorry fare charge.
The victim, Ketogloh Mawunyegah Edoh, has undergone treatment for his wounds and has been discharged from the hospital, although further treatment may be necessary.
Oppong, who has been charged with causing harm, appeared in court but his plea was not taken. He has been remanded to reappear on March 25, 2024, pending the outcome of the victim's surgery. This will help ascertain the severity of the harm caused and address an object identified by medics in the stabbed area.
According to Police Chief Inspector Joyce Nyarko, the altercation between the victim and the accused arose from a 50 pesewas balance dispute. The victim had offered to pay Gh₵ 4.50 pesewas instead of five cedis, leading to a quarrel with Oppong. The situation escalated when Oppong allegedly retrieved a knife from under his foot carpet at the driver’s side of the vehicle and stabbed the victim in the back.
Fortunately, onlookers intervened, disarmed Oppong, and rushed the victim to the hospital for treatment. The swift action of bystanders and the cooperation of the victim's family led to the apprehension of the accused.
