We live in an age where information is readily accessible, and yet, the reliability of that information is not always guaranteed. This reality has once again been brought to light in a recent case involving Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah and Mr William Edem Fugar.

Professor Addae-Mensah, a distinguished former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, has found himself in the midst of a controversy regarding his autobiography, "My Life: A Historical Narrative". It has come to light that certain portions of the autobiography, which were based on a Daily Graphic report, were found to be inaccurate and defamatory towards Mr Fugar, a respected legal practitioner.

In response to Mr Fugar's accusation of defamation, Professor Addae-Mensah has taken the commendable step of issuing a public apology and agreeing to rectify the offending words in the next print/edition of his autobiography. This move comes after both parties reached an agreement to settle the matter amicably, a decision that was endorsed by the High Court.

In his apology, Professor Addae-Mensah candidly admitted that he had relied on information from a Daily Graphic report without verifying its accuracy. He expressed regret for any harm caused to Mr Fugar's reputation and acknowledged Mr Fugar's esteemed standing in the legal profession spanning over 50 years.

As part of the settlement, Professor Addae-Mensah has undertaken to publish a quarter page advertisement of the apology in the Daily Graphic within 10 days. In return, Mr Fugar has agreed to release Professor Addae-Mensah from the claims in the suit and waive any cause of action arising from the defamatory statements in the book.

It is heartening to see a resolution that prioritizes the restoration of Mr Fugar's reputation over punitive measures. The decision not to seek costs further underscores the focus on upholding professional integrity and safeguarding one's standing in the community.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of due diligence in verifying sources, especially when it comes to documenting historical events or making references in published works. It also highlights the significance of accountability and rectifying unintended harm caused by misinformation.

Ultimately, this episode underscores the need for meticulousness and integrity in all forms of communication, be it personal or professional. It is a lesson that we can all take to heart as we navigate an era inundated with information, where discernment and responsibility are paramount.
