In a recent development, the Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has been summoned by Parliament to address concerns regarding alleged illegal charges imposed by the Ghana Airport Company (GAC).

The issue was brought to the attention of the house by the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, who highlighted a letter announcing a $10 maintenance fee for all round trips. This charge, as stated in the communication, is set to take effect in May.

During the parliamentary session, the former Minority leader questioned the legal basis for such a fee, expressing his reservations about the unilateral decision taken by the Ghana Airport Company.

In response to the concerns raised, the second deputy speaker, Andrew Asiamah, presiding over the session, directed the Minister for Transport to appear before the house on the 19th of March 2024 to provide clarification on the matter.

"It is imperative that the Minister addresses this particular issue as the Airport Company cannot unilaterally increase charges without proper oversight," stated Joe Wise, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in such matters.

This summons reflects Parliament's commitment to upholding legal and regulatory standards within the aviation sector. It underscores the importance of ensuring that any changes to fees and charges are made within the framework of established laws and regulations.

As this issue unfolds, it is essential for all stakeholders to await the Minister's briefing and for due process to be followed in addressing the concerns raised. The outcome of this parliamentary summons will undoubtedly have implications for the aviation industry and its stakeholders.

It is expected that the Minister's appearance before Parliament will provide clarity on the legal basis for the proposed maintenance charges and offer insight into the decision-making process of the Ghana Airport Company.

As the date for the Minister's appearance approaches, stakeholders and the public alike await further developments on this matter.
