In a recent case at the Tema Circuit Court ‘B’, a 27-year-old scrap dealer and herbal medicine peddler, Abdulai Sanusi, was denied bail after allegedly stabbing Vincent Akpotaka with scissors. The incident resulted in Akpotaka suffering from deep-cut wounds on his left rib and back.

The presiding judge, Klorkor Okai-Mills, denied Sanusi bail after he pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm. Sanusi, a Nigerien national, had his sentencing deferred to March 21 and was denied bail due to being a foreigner without a permanent place of abode.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Jacob Kuubal, the victim incurred a medical bill of Gh₵ 3000 and was detained at the hospital due to his inability to pay. The prosecutor presented the facts of the case, stating that the victim, a security guard at Sentuo Oil Refinery, had purchased medicine from Sanusi on credit and promised to pay later.

The altercation occurred when Sanusi demanded payment from the victim, who explained his inability to pay at that moment. This led to a scuffle during which Sanusi stabbed the victim with scissors before fleeing the scene. The victim was later treated for deep-cut wounds and underwent surgery at Tema General Hospital.

The severity of the victim's injuries, as outlined by Dr. Iddi Sumaili, included internal bleeding and perforation of the stomach lining, necessitating surgical intervention.

The court's decision to deny bail underscores the gravity of the offense and prioritizes the victim's well-being. The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of resorting to violence in resolving disputes and highlights the importance of upholding the rule of law in addressing such incidents.

As the legal proceedings continue, it is imperative to ensure that justice is served and that the victim receives the necessary support for his recovery. The incident also underscores the need for individuals, particularly those engaged in commercial transactions, to seek amicable resolutions to disputes and refrain from resorting to violence.
